There's never just one way to look at things.
What do you think of when you look at the picture to the left?
Do you see 'a long road ahead'? or do you see 'an exciting adventure ahead'?
More often than not, we tend to have a negative outlook on things.....it has a lot to do with who influenced us when we were growing up.
Growing up, have you ever heard statements like: 'life is hard', 'you gotta have a college education', 'pick a profession that makes a lot of money', 'get married so someone will take care of you', 'crying is for babies', 'always put others first before yourself'?
Then those kinds of thoughts get ingrained in our heads and we'll live from those types of beliefs until we question them. And to get to that point of questioning them, usually some form of pain or suffering is involved. Because if you were totally happy, why would you have to change anything?
But if you're not happy, your body will let you know. You'll feel unhappy or overwhelmed, or frustrated etc. And when you finally get sick and tired of feeling that way, you'll begin to take a peek into what is causing those feelings to surface.
And the majority of the time it's our beliefs, opinions, thoughts, and ideals that were never questioned.
Let's take one belief from above:
You gotta have a college education.
Is that really true? When you begin to question beliefs and opinions, you begin to see that most of the time they really aren't the truth.
Do you know anyone who hasn't gone to college and is doing ok? I know many....actually I know many people who are doing more than ok and didn't go to college.
And when you believe something so strongly, it closes you down to other perspectives. But as soon as you question a belief, it opens you up to seeing different points of view.
It's such an awful day because it's raining out?
Is that really true? What is it about water coming down from the sky that makes the day so awful? Is that true or just something you've heard someone say through the years? If it didn't rain, we'd all have no food to eat. Can you imagine how the earth would look if it didn't rain? The rain is actually one factor that makes the earth thrive and look so beautiful.
There's always more than one way to look at things.
So next time it rains, what perspective will you choose?
