Have you ever noticed how flexible bamboo is?
Bamboo can bend quite deeply with ease no matter what is causing it to bend.
Whether it's been a storm with 5 mph winds or a hurricane, like the recent hurricane Sandy this past October with winds at 80 mph, the bamboo in my backyard went with the flow.
It withstood the 80 mph winds by not resisting them.
There was a different result for another tree in my backyard which stood tall and stiff, resisting the winds and by doing so, fell on top of my fence and onto my neighbor's roof.
Of course not all trees are built like bamboo and can bend and flex and pop back up with ease - but it's a great quality to use as a metaphor. :)
And trees don't have the conscious choice to be stiff or not, but we do.
And that's pretty cool!
When life throws a challenge our way that we don't like, we can choose to either fight (resist) it, or we can choose
to flow and ease into it.
Resist versus Flow
It's not always easy to choose the flow path. But in the long run, choosing flow is a lot easier than choosing the resistance path.
Just look at the bamboo metaphor.....bamboo experiences a challenge, it bends and stays flexible, and in the end, it pops back up.
On the other hand, the stiff, steadfast tree fights and resists challenges and ends up falling over and being chopped down.
So for today, and the next few days, when a challenge arises, notice whether you close down and resist, or open up and flow.
Whichever one it is, don't judge yourself, just notice the response. For first we must become aware of our reaction/response before we can choose to respond differently.
And if you need help, imagine gorgeous, green bamboo trees flowing with whatever life throws its way........how can you become more flexible like bamboo?
