Use the Investigative Approach

The next time you experience anxiety, use the 'investigative approach'.

What's that you ask.....

Well, it means putting on your best detective garb, sans mustache if you wish, and grabbing your big eyeglass magnifier.

Take that magnifier and use it to uncover the conversation you are having in your head.

I'll give you a recent example........

Situations where my anxiety can show up is any time I feel trapped. Even if I'm taking a class in, say, a small room, I usually like to sit on the end of a row if chairs are set up and toward the middle to back of the room.

I just don't like to feel 'clamped in'.

And this situation recently happened to me, and I started to feel the anxiety sensations creep in and I totally knew why. But instead of resisting those sensations, I decided to allow them in and do some 'investigative work'.

Here's what I did:

  • I noticed the thoughts I was thinking (things like, what if the sensations get really bad and I can't get out of here?)
  • Then I questioned every thought and asked myself if they are really true.
  • Then I became very present with where I was, breathed deep, and knew that if I had to leave, there was no problem, I would just leave.

That's it......the simple 'Investigative Approach' works every time.

It works because it brings you back to the moment and to what is really true.

Give it a try the next time those anxiety sensations creep up on you........
